In addition to directing the part-time program for landscape painting and drawing at “Fabrikken” in Norway, I am committed to share the philosophy and technical foundations of en plein air painting through intensive workshops. I would say that fully emerged in the wilderness, with perhaps the sole focus on observing and painting is the purest, most direct and a profound way, to learn the craft of this century old tradition.

In 2026 we will approach Jotunheimen in Norway, the home of the tallest mountain of the country, as well as some of the largest glaciers.

Workshop specific information

After the success of last year’s expedition, we are ready to continue our mission. In August of 2026, we will venture into Jotunheimen, Norway’s most iconic national park. Home of Galdhøpiggen, its largest mountain as well as some of the country’s biggest glaciers.
A place where artists through history have dwelled, creating some of the worlds most spectacular landscape paintings. Where rivers run wild, and salmon climb. Where eagles sore and the cracking of icecaps keeps you humbled. Where weather most certainly is dramatic and where the view of the whole world feels accessible —— we will place our easels and get to work.
Emerged in nature in order to portray it, we look for presence in our paintings, depth of field, atmosphere and light. The almost sculpted form of the landscape will guide our path as well as our brushwork. Our hands will balance nature’s grandeur and the artistic individuality, similar to a record of a conversation.

A seven day expedition with a certified mountaineering guide and medical support we will journey into one of the world’s most beautiful locations, where we will hike and paint together, in all weathers. This is an opportunity to experience the freedom to roam and create in the breathtaking, spectacular Nordic landscape. Together with both professional and talented artists, all sharing a love for nature and painting.

So, yes, the packing list is slightly long, very specific, and needs to be very light.
The workshop is not for the fainthearted, and one should be prepared for and expect anything nature can cause. That is where this painting workshop separates itself from any other workshop out there. We are in complete wilderness, and at natures mercy, all for the sake of painting. This gives us an incredible chance at making painting as primitive as sleeping or eating. It filters out the noise, and grounds us in the most incredible ways, and gives life and richness to our work.

General information:
Education is mainly through individual critiques and constructive feedback, paint-a-longs, demos and talks with a focus on personal approach. All outdoors gear needed, you will have to bring yourself and we will need to get insight in what backpack, shelter and sleeping equipment you are bringing. A full packing list can be provided upon request, and or will be sent out upon your booking or reservation of your spot. We are also happy to send you recommendations on products with all levels of price/weight/quality ratios. We do not offer any carrying services; your pack is your responsibility. In other words, we travel light and we carry our own burden (literally).

Mark, the workshop only holds place for 8 attendees. Non-painting partners can be considered, but painters will have priority.

P.S. The attendee or considered attendee must also inform us pre hand about any health issues, and generally speaking be fit to live and travel by foot in the outdoors for a week. These criteria are for your and everyone else’s safety in case of emergency or accidents.

“Joakim is an excellent teacher. I learned in one week what might have taken me years to learn on my own. I addition, the Norwegian mountain landscape and plein air painting combined offers a truly unique experience that I believe only Joakim provides.”
